Scottish employment rate at record high
Latest official figures from the ONS (Office for National Statistics) show that more people are working in Scotland than at any other time - since records began in 1992. We now have 2,594,000 employed in Scotland, a quarterly increase of 9,000 from April to June. The yearly increase in the Scottish employment rate increased by a very healthy 63,000. The really positive is that we now have 18 consecutive monthly releases, the longest ever unbroken run of increasing Scottish employment.
In percentage terms, our employment rate now stands at 73.5%, which is ahead of the UK average of 73%.
Sector wise, the services sector dominates with 2,165,735 employed from the 2,594,000 total (84%).
Unemployment has also fallen for the quarter - by 2,000, or 0.1%. The total now stands at 176,000. Over the year, unemployment is down 21,000. The unemployment rate of 6.4% is identical to the UK average.
